Pied Currawong
Strepera graculina
Their ringing calls carry across the suburbs in spring. Currawongs move down from the ranges in winter and breed in urban areas through Poorneet. They're smart, adaptable, and sometimes predatory on smaller birds. Their yellow eyes watch from eucalypt branches. When their calls fill the morning, spring is properly here.
Climate context
Traditionally moved to lowlands as alpine temperatures dropped, but increasingly staying year-round in urban areas—possibly responding to urban warmth.
